I made mine different. Rooks are long hex nuts, period. Pawns are bolts with acorn nuts on top.

I've been toying with a similar idea, but maybe a bit more developed. For instance using stainless steel and bluing the "black" figures. My 12 year old nephew made a useable chess set out of some of his LEGO bricks. I think there's no limit to what you can use to make a chess set.

I do something a little more simple and faster. I don’t use cement, drills, eye bolts, 2x4’s, buckets or bed sheets. I use a telescoping back drop frame (roughly $80 to $180 depending on how heavy duty it is), a screen up to 150” elastic projection screen (price depends on the size of screen but all screens are a cheap price for their size) and elastic backdrop clamps (about $10). I also put more grommets in the screens to get as many wrinkles out as I can. They never seem to put enough grommets in these screens. So I had to get a grommet set at one point (I can’t remember the price but that was a one price deal for many of my screens. Yes, I have more than one screen, all different sizes), Put the frame up, put to whatever size it needs to be, attach the screen, adjust the clamps and frame to get all the wrinkles out, anchor the frame in place so it doesn’t fall over (I’m lucky enough to have something behind it to tie it to like my porch railing so it doesn’t fall forwards and it’s always on a piece of land that has a slight down hill run so it won’t fall backwards), set up the projector and you’re ready to watch a movie. Takes roughly an hour or so to set up (maybe longer depending on how perfect you want it) but it’s easy to put up, easy to tear down (so it’s not a permanent fixture in your backyard and it’s portable), easy to store away (everything comes in a bag and it’s pretty compact when everything is in their bag. A closet or under a bed will store it just fine) and it’s well worth it.

That was so cool. I think this would be a great project to do with my son. He is interested in learning to play chess. I started teaching him and in no time he was really challenging me. Of course that is not saying much.

I tried to do this inside but the fumes were too strong so I took my glass outside and it's cold out so my paint ran. Do you have any ideas on how to remove the sea glass spray paint from glass so I can start over? Any ideas would be so helpful. Thank you so much!
